Immunology is a science that focuses on the function of the immune system (IS), which can be defined by the mechanisms allowing a vertebrate organism to deal with various pathogenic microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi), but also with its own cells that have become tumorous. The IS must therefore be capable of eliminating pathogens and tumor cells, coexisting with the non harmful flora (microbiota), and not developing any adverse reactions towards its own unaltered cells (tolerance).
