This lesson provides a brief overview of the writer Kate Chopin and offers a closer look at one of her famous short story "Story of an Hour" 1894. In this lesson, students learn about aspects of women's status in fin de siècle America. The female protagonist, who can be said to mirror the case of many women of the late 19th century, portrays vivid instance of confinement within marriage. While women began to experience a sense of freedom due to the rise of the feminist movement during this period, the story shows that this freedom is ephemeral and continued to be dismantled by the patriarchal society.  Further to this, this lesson draws upon the most significant literary devices and how they are applied to the story.
