Piper Alpha, an oil production platform in the North Sea, was the site of the world's most lethal offshore disaster on July 6, 1988.

An explosion and resulting oil and gas fire on a platform resulted in the fatalities of 167 individuals, including two rescue vessel crewmen, while only 61 workers escaped. Thirty (30) bodies were never found.
